Gargantua- TRUE

The film depicts the huge black hole of Gargantua as a black circle surrounded by a swirling mass of stars and galaxies, almost like a human eye.

The distortion of the stars, known as ‘gravitational lensing’ was generated by computer models.

In fact, the computer simulations were so accurate that Thorne and the team discovered that black holes are slightly concave on one side and have a bulge on the other. It is the first time the phenomenon has ever been seen, and Thorne has now produced a scientific paper detailing the discovery.

The black hole depicted in Interstellar is probably the only known accurate example of what it would look like to a human if you could ever get close enough to view it.

Jean-Pierre Luminet This image clearly corresponds to isoradial curves seen by an observer slightly above the disk's plane (say less than 5°). The big problem is that they pretend to have the most realistic representation of a black hole accretion disk, but it is obviously WRONG, because it does not take into account the intrinsic flux properties of the thin accretion disk (the luminosity is not uniform throughout the rings) and the strong Doppler and gravitational spectral shifts induced by the rotation of the disk at relativistic speed. Due to those effects, the apparent flux must be enhanced on the side where the photons are blueshifted and decreased on the opposite side.
After mine already published in 1979 ( http://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1979A%26A....75..228L), the most accurate BH+thin accretion disk images have been computed by J.A.Marck in the 1990's, and as usual it is not referenced in US media. I give here the TRUE picture of BH + thin accretion disk calculated for about the same angle of view than the "Interstellar" picture. The intrinsic flux properties of the accretion disk as well as the Doppler and gravitational spectral shifts are rightly taken into account. As explained above, there is a strong asymmetry between the receding and the approaching sides of the disk. This shows why the "Interstellar" picture is not at all realistic.

Jean-Pierre Luminet Addendum: Yesterday Kip Thorne has spontaneoulsly sent me an email where he says "The doppler shift was left out of the images, because (as you showed long ago) it makes the disk highly asymmetric, and much harder for a mass audience to
grasp." He i
s now writing a technical paper for Classical and Quantum Gravity, in which he will take into account all the neglected effects. And he adds "Our paper begins by discussing your pioneering work on this."

Christopher Nolan was initially concerned that a scientifically accurate depiction of a black hole would not be visually comprehensible to an audience and would require the effects team to unrealistically alter its appearance. The visual representation of the black hole in the movie does not account for the Doppler effect, which when added by the visual effects team, resulted in an asymmetrically lit black and blue black hole. Nolan didn't like the asymmetry caused by the Doppler effect and thought moviegoers wouldn't understand why it was asymmetrical, so the finished black hole ignored the Doppler effect.[62] Nolan found the finished effect to be understandable, provided that he maintained consistent camera perspectives. "What we found was as long as we didn't change the point of view too much, the camera position, we could get something very understandable".[63]

The portrayal of what a wormhole would look like is considered scientifically correct. Rather than a two-dimensional hole in space, it is depicted as a sphere, showing a distorted view of the target galaxy.[64] The accretion disk of the black hole was described by Thorne as "anemic and at low temperature—about the temperature of the surface of the sun", allowing it to emit appreciable light, but not enough gamma radiation and X-rays to threaten nearby astronauts and planets.[65]

Correct depiction of the Penrose process was also praised.[66]

Всеки петък от CERN пускат на фейсбук страницата им задачка-закачка :) "Guess what it is?".
